As a beauty product junkie, I recently wondered: “Do we really need to be using eye cream?” There are so many skincare products out there, but obviously we don’t need all of them. As someone who has a 12 step nighttime skin care routine, I wondered if I could eliminate the whole eye cream thing and simply use my moisturizer or night cream around my eyes.
After doing some research online, I quickly learned that eye cream and moisturizers are not created equal. First things first, the skin under your eye is the thinnest on your face. So while you could use a moisturizer if you choose to, there’s a likely chance that there will be irritation and not as much hydration since face moisturizer is not formulated to hydrate under eye skin specifically. Skin under your eye loses hydration faster.
The short answer: yes, you should be using an eye cream everyday if looking youthful is important to you.
While various resources have said you can start as early as your teens for preventative measures, starting to use eye cream in your twenties is best. And if you’re wondering whether it’s best to use in the morning or the evening, experts our saying wearing eye cream in the evening is best.
Most people don’t know how delicate their under eye skin is and make the mistake of rubbing in their eye cream, which is a big no-no. Ideally, you want to use your ring finger (it’s the finger that applies the least pressure) and dab the product on without getting to close to your eyes. Any product – even if it is designed for under eye – will irritate your eyes if you apply product too close.
Lastly, you want to make sure you pay attention to ingredients whenever you purchase eye cream products. There are eye creams and eye serums out there, but it’s about finding one eye product that works for you. If you found an eye serum that does wonders, stick to it. If you prefer eye cream, that’s fine too. But one product is more than enough. Layering eye cream products isn’t ideal.
When it comes to the best ingredients, it’s all about hydration! So eye creams that have vitamin E or hyaluronic acid are key. They’re incredibly moisturizing yet still gentle enough for under eye skin.
I’m currently loving the L’Oreal Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Honey Gel Eye.

Helping people excites me.
And no, nothing here on this site is rocket science. Just glimpses of my everyday life - what I eat, what I wear, the products I use, how I work and how I take care of myself. If that’s your sort of thing - you know, life - then this is totally the place for you.
